One of the hardest things for women of all ages is finding balance in the clothes we wear. We understand it’s important to avoid highly sexualized clothing, but we also don’t want to hide our femininity or forget about our sense of fashion and style. The good news is that balance can be found through practicing modesty. Learning how to dress modestly does not have to be a trial! When Christian women follow the principles of their faith, it becomes much easier to enjoy our clothes and set a positive example for others to follow.

Let’s explore five ways that Christian women of all life stages can find modest fashions online that allows them to respect their God-given bodies while also letting their natural beauty shine.

Understanding the Importance of Modest Fashion for Christian Women

And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes. - 1 Timothy 2:9

Each woman has her own personal style. This uniqueness makes each one of us shine! When trying to figure out how to dress modestly in your preferred fashion style, ask yourself this question: Is what I’m wearing honoring God and respecting the gifts He has given to me?

The Bible has a lot to say about clothing. Think about the “Proverbs 31 woman.” She wore fine apparel but was still considered a praiseworthy woman. When done with humility and a pure heart, your personal style honors the Lord and the love He has given you.

The Don’ts of Modest Fashion

In your heart, you probably know or at least have an idea of what kind of clothing isn’t modest. When you’re learning how to dress modestly, ask yourself these questions.

  • Is the cut of the clothing showing off cleavage, your stomach, buttocks, or thighs?
  • Is there a higher than normal possibility of an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction when you sit down, lean over, or make another movement?
  • Does your clothing cling to your body like a second skin?
  • Are there sexualized or otherwise inappropriate words or symbols printed on the fabric?
  • Are your accessories unnecessarily flashy?

If the answer to any of those questions is yes, then it is time to update your wardrobe and change your outfit.

Finally, ask yourself, “Would I be happy with my outfit if I were to meet Jesus today?”

For that question, your answer should be yes!

Tips You Should Follow

Figuring out how to dress modestly can be as simple as knowing how to make multiple pieces work together! That’s the great thing about layers — they’re both modest and fashionable.

  • Pull-Over Shirts: Look for v-neck and crew-neck t-shirts and sweatshirts that fit correctly. Short and long sleeve cotton shirts are a great way to add a modest layer to a button-up shirt or dress that may be a bit too revealing.
  • Light Sweaters: Light sweaters are another stylish option to wear over a top or dress when you want a bit more coverage.
  • Flattering Blazers: Blazers tailored for the female form can be dressed up or down depending on your style and the occasion. This is an excellent way to make a sleeveless top appropriate for church or the office.
  • Skirts and Dresses: Skirts and dresses should reach the knee area or below. Knee-length jean skirts or plain black skirts are a favorite because they go with any top or sweater.
  • Accessories: Colorful scarves can add a pop of color to any outfit. Elegant bracelets and necklaces that feature scripture or Christian symbols are also a tasteful choice.

The journey of our children is not about us. It is about how we point them to the Father. How we help them develop a relationship with Him, be intimately aware of Him through the Word and through prayer. When we remove ourselves and our pride and ego from them, it allows freedom to love them through it all without fear. We place them in the very capable hands of their Heavenly Father and continue to point them back to Him every chance we get.

Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus, in Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Isn’t that amazing? As a child of God, good works are prepared ahead of time for us!
